[Nelug] Gentoo Linux & Kernel Panic

Can someone please help me with the problem I have with installing Gentoo
Linux

I grabbed the latest version (1.4) from the web site and installed it using
the instructions found here:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml Everything went fine
until I came to reboot, when after starting the USB subsystem I get the
error message: Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!

I've tried disabling the USB in the BIOS but to no effect, so I don't think
that its the USB (but I could be wrong).

Please help as this is my first real attempt to ditch WinXP (although I do
have a firewall and two servers running Linux).
