[Nelug] Gentoo Linux & Kernel Panic

Do you know what "starting the USB subsystem" actually does ?
And what is the next thing that *should* happen? I guess I'm asking -
are the init scripts easy to follow so we can see what the system's
trying to do when you get the panic? I don't know gentoo at all so
can't tell you where to look for these - maybe /etc/rc.d
