Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for the replies and insights into what you know and/or use.

Richard, never tried gentoo before have seen it before but not played
with it, will give it a go I think :-) I thought ubuntu was debian based
? maybe i'm mistaken only been using it a little while, after a friend
found it and suggested that I see if I like it.

James, I'm not that experience at using linux to be honest I just dabble
here and there and see what works and what doesn't I break things more
often than fix them :| but learning along the way too.

Jordan, Slackware is something I have never heard of, are you using it
as a desktop or a server ? from what you say about reliability and so on
it sounds good, will try it and also gentoo and see what I how I get on
with those, hopefully I will find what I am looking for in one of them :)

Jeremy, I tried that too, but was a bit like a lost sheep doing it that
way as wasn't sure of the commands or anything, never used anything but
redhat based things and mandrake really. I'm quite happy with ubuntu as
it goes would be happier still if I could get everything that I would
ideally like to work perfectly or atleast in some minor way.

Peter, you can upgrade ubuntu easily by following the guide here
http://ubuntuguide.org/4.10/index.html#upgradewartytohoary
this upgrades you from Warty Warthog to Hoary Hedgehog (Beta) hope that
helps you out some.

Nick, Not keen on Fedora + webmin, not very easy to use I thought, it
doesn't look all that great either to be honest, I dont know or
understand webmin very well and I couldn't work out how to do most
things with it, like create multi user accounts for a single domain,
manage multiple domains and the email associated with them in it, i.e.
setup forwarding addresses or pop/imap accounts.

As for the mysql I compiled from source as there is no rpm of mysql 4
for fedora 3, so did install all that but just complained about unable
to connect on socket, tried various things googled it and found people
with the same problem, but no one seemed to know the solution.

Bluequartz does look very interesting indeed, no screen shots tho, but
have used raq 3,4 and 550 so kinda guess what it'll look like, I only
see a download for fedora core 1 which is a shame, doubt mysql4 would
work on that ?

Thank you all for the responses :-)
