Richard came up with good suggestion at the end of the meeting; use
the version of mysqldump on the new, MySQL 5.x, server to extract the
data from the original, MySQL 3.x, server (use the --host option to
tell it where to fetch the data from).

This might help avoid some of the weirdness we saw in the dump you
brought along; it looks like the newer versions have improved the
quality of the SQL they produce.
