Steve,

The first thing to do, if it is within your power, is to install 
something like Spamassassain to filter junk mail out. SA trains
over a period and will remove junk automatically after a while.

Restricting "rest of the world" access to LUGoG lists could
have one of two undesirable effects:

1. Anyone from a neighbouring LUG who wanted to tell us about
e.g. an install fest or machines going begging would have
to be a list subscriber and maintain their subscription.

2. J Random Glastonbury resident hears about the LUG somewhere
and decides that (s)he wants to find out more before he joins.
He/she may feel "members only" posting discourages from actually
joining the list.
