"linux looms large" aug 2003 edition.

Hi,
I am head of Curriculum ICT at st. Dunstan's Community School
Glastonbury U.K.
It is good to see that you are waking up to the force of Linux in your
August News updates. page 20.
I have been using Linux at home for 3 years now and am convinced of it's
superiority over Windows in an educational setting.
Not only because of its stability but also because of it's savings on
implementation and availability of free and open source appliactions
that will run on it.
Next year we will be implementing the Key Stage 3 strategy for ICT along
with the DFES target for a ratio of 1PC to every 5 students by Sept
2004.
As a manager, if I go with the current average rating of Workstation pc
running XP with internet access and office XP software (edu licence) I
am looking at a machine costing me approx =A3600 and i need a server to
run it all. I need to buy 65 workstations to get me at this ratio.
That is =A339,000 plus 3 servers at approx =A31000 each =3D =A342,000.
However I have just trialled a thin clent network of 15 donated p100 pcs
connected to a power linux server at a total cost of =A3700 for just the
hardware involved. There will be overheads in terms of support, training
and installation (electrics and cabling) but they will be there anyway
if I went with XP. I can therefore get basic access to 65 machines for
=A33034 if i go Thin Client alone.=20
I get full internet access and full MSOFFICE compatibilty with
OpenOffice.org. As a manager on a limited budget with many cutbacks this
year, there is no question. I am switching to LINUX.

Kind regards,
Steve Leonard-Clarke,
Head of ICT Curriculum,
St. Dunstan's Community School,
Glastonbury.
