When it comes to MIDI sequencing Rosegarden-4 and MusE are about the only
serious contenders (timidity does not do sequencing only playback AFAIK) you
need to be running ALSA and Jack. Brahms will run under artsd (KDE sound
daemon).
http://linux-sound.org and http://www.alsa-project.org are probably the best
places to start looking if you haven't already.
