IPtables is the recommended packet filter, but there are ipchains and
ipfwadm modules for backwards compatiblity with kernel versions 2.2
and 2.0. In menuconfig they can be select from Networking Options ->
Netfilter Configuration.

The options in .config are:
CONFIG_IP_NF_COMPAT_IPCHAINS
CONFIG_IP_NF_COMPAT_IPFWADM
