The problem is most likely something to do with the fact that you're logging
in using gdm now - and as a consequence, gdm is being intelligent and
setting your LANG environment as "english". Go log into a console - chances
are (unless you've got some foreign locales installed) that your LANG
variable is "C".

Go back to gdm, set the language in the menu to "C", log in, gdm will ask
you if you want to store that language setting, then it'll log you in as
usual and perl won't complain any more.
