I've been chasing a similar problem all week with Demon & Mandrake 8.0,
setting the mtu to 500 seems to reduce freeze ups but isn't a fix. :-(
I think it's pppd related as an identical machine but with an ISDN card
doesn't have the problem. Next thing to try was a kernel upgrade if I can
this Dang 2.4.7 to compile :-(
MTU setting is in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 on a recent
Mandrake or Redhat box and maybe others as well.
If I ever get to the bottom of it completely I'll post the conclusion.
