The best resource is the "Linux on Laptops" site at
http://www.linux-laptop.net/ - there you'll find write-ups from people
with success stories.

With a bit of work you can get Linux on any laptop. I had a bit of work
with my Vaio - USB floppy drive and PCMCIA CD-ROM is a tricky combination
for a fresh install - but it was harder for me because I was removing
windows altogether. If I had been happy to dual-boot it would actually
have been easier.

Have a look at the site before choosing your model. Pick from a range
with lots of success stories.

Try Ctl-n and Ctl-p then.

Being a vi fanatic I have 'set editing-mode vi' in my .inputrc, which
allows me to edit the command line using vi keystrokes.

Have a look at the readline documentation (only available in info format,
afaik) as this is the library that's allowing you to do this. The great
thing about readline is that it is used in so many apps, which gives you
the same set of keystrokes in a wide variety of places (the postgres and
unixODBC interactive shells, the ftp client etc etc).
