[Gllug] Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, Linux

Given the cost an SGI workstation with IRIX installed over that of a PC
running Linux, I'd know what I'd rather go with. The next question is,
however, can existing Maya licenses be transferred over to Linux without
charge (I know some unscrupulous companies require you to fork out a new
license for different platforms of the same software).

As for Linux in visual effects - were they not used as early as 1997 in
James Cameron's Titanic? I seem to remember something about a render
farm made up of loads of Alpha boxes running Linux.

Regards,

	Martyn

There were a couple of interesting articles over the last few days about
the inroads that Linux is making into the special effects industry.
With
the recent release of Maya this will only gather pace. It will be most
satisfying when i go to see Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings over the
Christmas period, to know that the effects were developed on Linux
boxes.
It's a shame our politicians are not so enlightented about the benefits
of
free software.

The penguins continue their march onto "world domination" :)
