Yes, the on disk size is larger, but if I understand things correctly,
the memory usage of the program shouldn't be affected. The debugging
symbols aren't actually loaded unelss you're actually running the
program under a debugger.

Which is not to say I haven't seen different behaviour between programs
compiled with -g and without -- I have (yes, with gcc), which makes
debugging *really* difficult at times :-)
