Note that you would usually be able to do ctrl-alt-F6 at that point
to get to a command prompt login. If that works, "telinit 2" to get
the machine to a sane state where you can start fault finding.

First thing to do is to boot without X. Enter "linux 2" at the LILO
prompt to boot to a non-X environment with network dependent services
disabled (NFS, NIS etc.)

Then try and see what the problem is from there. Run "startx" and see
if you get any errors. Check /var/log/dmesg and /var/log/messages for
supicious looking entries.
