The 'cheap' ADSL option in the UK involves using a dedicated ADSL 'modem',
which plugs into the PC over USB. As this is far from a standard
configuration, it needs special drivers - there are free beer drivers
available from the manufacturer (Alcatel), and free speech drivers
available from a French bloke called Benoit, who wrote them by sniffing the
USB comms on a Windows box. The Benoit driver is far better and easier to
use than the Alcatel driver, but neither driver is trivial to install and
configure.
