No, it's not just you. I'm sure I've heard of dumber ideas, just can't
think of any....

Oh, if anyone wants this sort of thing, check out fastmail.fm. Offers
POP/IMAP/Web access to a mailbox for free, with server side mail
filtering. Runs on Linux (Cyrus IMAP), *doesn't* require IE.
