Title of talk: 'The Pause Before the Next Wave'

Abstract: With this year's high-tech slowdown in full swing, programmers,
web de velopers, system administrators, and other IT professionals are
suddenly facing an uncertain future, as their stock options go underwater
and layoffs replace se emingly bottomless demand for people with tech
skills. The dotcom party has turned into an industry-wide hangover.
But can this really be the end of an era?"

According to Tim, "Personally, I think this is just a breather before the
forwar d momentum resumes. I can't say how long the breather will take,
but I can say with some certainty that the next boom will be even bigger
than the last. We're on the verge of fundamental technology shifts as
profound as the rise of the personal computer in the mid 80s or the
coming of the Web and the mass-market Inte rnet in the early 90s".

Tim O'Reilly is founder and president of O'Reilly & Associates, thought by
many to be the best computer book publisher in the world. In addition to
publishing books, O'Reilly has also been a pioneer in the popularization
of the Internet. O 'Reilly's Global Network Navigator site (GNN, which was
sold to America Online in September 1995) was the first Web portal and
the first true commercial site on the World Wide Web.

O'Reilly & Associates is the premier information source for leading-edge
computer technologies
