I wasn't saying that chap exists because of windows :-) I was saying that 
ISPs support chap over plain-text login because their (majority) customer 
base has it installed and enabled by default. And then the access 
routers/terminal servers picked it up and made it easy ... so ISPs stopped 
supporting anything *except* chap/pap.

There are also great technical reasons for it, but it's not necessary over 
a true point-to-point connection ... but at the ISP end there are not many 
scalable point-to-point solutions.

I've nothing against it - it works, and I use it.
