[Gllug] local loopback

Thanks for all the info on ethernet - I'll have a look in Computer
Exchange in Bromley, I've had stuff off them in the past that has been
OK.

just another quick question:

I was setting up an Apache server last night and was having problems.
I tried "ping 127.0.0.1" which gave an error and "ifconfig" returned
nothing.
Eventually I tracked down something online like "ifconfig localhost lo"
(from memory) plus some "route" command which seemed to give me a local
loopback so I could test Apache OK.

I'm using Mandrake 8.0
The question is I thought that "lo" was always present by default and
indeed was essential for some low-level Linux operations.
Is this not the case?
