Hi,
Just wondering. If Positive Internet donated a small machine on our network
to "GLLUG" what would/could be done with it, who would/could have access to
it, and who would/could want to manage/run or be responsible for it?
Perhaps a web server people can host their (non commercial?) web sites for
free on? Perhaps a GLLUG questionaire/application form to get an account on
it?
Shell access would be one of the most attractive things to give out
accounts for I would think, useful for network diagnosis etc. too.
What needs to be thought about though is that this wouldn't (initially
anyway) scale up to thousands of users, so if word got out that just
subscribing to the GLLUG mailing list and posting a "hello world" message
gets you a free shell account things might get difficult. (not to mention
possible security issues). How can a GLLUG person be more clearly defined /
qualified. ;-)
Also, someone suggested that building a Linux distribution together might
be an interesting idea...how about working together to build this server
and to make decisions about what software / distribution etc. can go on it?
Too many roots spoil the broth surely though...
Just wanted to float the idea around. Positive wants to help promote Linux
and support Open Source and community etc, and this is one of the ways
perhaps we might do this (as well as by having crazy ice parties of course).
Thanks,
Jake.
