[Gllug] adding multiple IP's to one interface?

Is it possible to do this under Linux without explicitly specifying
the alias number after the interface? On Solaris, I could do:

	ifconfig eri0 addif x.x.x.x

and it'll automatically pick the next unused alias number (e.g., eri0:1).
Under OpenBSD, I'd jsut do:

	ifconfig fxp0 alias x.x.x.x

and it would all work. It just seems clumsy that under Linux I'd need to
explicitly say eth0:1.
