Check for a setting xdmcp=0 this means that remote logins are disabled
A quick grep in /etc/X11 for xdmcp should flush it out.
If you run xdmcp you can get some lovely remote login sessions:
from init 3 in redhat (console mode) try startx -query
remote.ip.address and it should bring up a remote login on from the
other box
you can also try on a box with X already running:
startx -- -query remote.ip.address :2
(on redhat - I mention this because I have not tried it on another
distro) you will get your normal X session on console 7 and the new one
on 8.
I find it an easy way to flick between boxes when bored ;-)
