I don't think the opposition _is_ to the idea of having a very limited
set of logical markup tags; the sole deficiency of <em> and <strong>
is that they are not so readily parsed by humans - you can become
accustomed to them, but they take up a lot of space - so they would
demand that mail clients understand them in a way that conventional
emphasis does not.

I certainly would prefer a system of logical markup tags for
indicating paragraph breaks and quoting; unfortunately, we aren't
being offered that.
