XFree 4 doesn't prevent you form using modelines. It simply has a wide
selection of modelines built into the X server - when you start X, it
looks at the resolution you've specified, then at the sync rates you've
specified for your monitor. It then picks what it feels to be the most
appropriate modeline - this isn't always the best, as the built in mode
lines tend to favour "will work nearly anywhere" over "makes absolute
best use of this screen".
I run at 1152x864, and still use a modeline I wrote some time ago under
XFree 3. It gives me a better refresh on my monitor than the default
1152x864 mode that X picked.
