Actually, although it may look this way, and some distributions may
do this (Slackware admits to doing it, just to keep up with the others),
Red hat at least don't. They have a consistent version numbering policy
that they have stuck to for many years now. They aim to release a new
version every 6 months, and each new release gets a new minor version
number. Each release that affects binary compatibility (usually caused
by something like a gcc or libc change) gets a new major version number.
