you could try using CPAN to get upgrade perl...

i might just note that i have never got this to work properly,
until, i upgraked make and ... autoconf IIRC.
oh and make sure your clock is right! - that bit took ages.
perl 5.6.1 has *date* dependencies in the makfile building
scripts ... *lots* of *fun*!
