I started out using Evolution which was OK, very like Outlook Express if
you're used to that but crashed occasionally and can be a bit slow on a
low spec machine. I did get it to work with gpg. It would be very good
for someone new to Unix/Linux but difficult to extend for a "power
user".

I moved to mutt recently, very steep learning curve - I thought at first
I'd just configure it and away I'd go but first I had to learn all about
fetchmail/sendmail/procmail etc. It does seem rather baffling at first
but I'm slowly getting there and I can see it will be very powerful. I
guess it falls inbetween an all-inclusive package like Evolution and a
library of mail components that you glue together yourself.

I suppose there's an inverse relationship between ease of learning/use
and flexibility. You could say C is the most flexible email program -
you can have your email reader exactly as you want ;-).
