Plus more of the same. Nothing since then, but the week before:

And more of it. Cool line of ^@ or what?
Time to replace the hard disk maybe? It is an 800Mb Western Digital
"Caviar", so it is quite old. The entire disk is hda1
I've seen this before with suspect kernels - this is the Redhat 2.2.19
stock kernel though. The other possibility is, bizarre as this may sound,
the disk cooling fan I bought for it may not be doing it any good. It
certainly ran very hot without a fan for ages without a fan. That being
said, it has been some months with its fan now, and it could be merely the
cool breeze blowing over it that keeps it alive.
Anyway, does anyone have any specific advice? If the disk is likely to
crash at any moment I will be tempted to keep on with it, run it into the
ground, and see what uptime I can get from it when it finally packs
in. If you have come across this before as a fixable condition though - bad
cable, controller/motherboard problems, or solved by a bit of fscking I
would be interested in knowing so I don't leave it to stew!
Thanks,
Bill.
