[Gllug] ssh / xauth

I'm trying to ssh to a box that doesn't have X running (though I think
it is installed).
I get the error message "sh: /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth: No such file or
directory"
I don't understand why ssh needs X anyway since it's a command-line
program?
I've seen some mention of this on the newsgroups (all relating to RH7.1
which is what's on the box) but nothing useful or that I can understand.
Any idea what's going on here?
(I'm actually ssh'ing successfully to another machine first, and then
trying to ssh from that machine to the box which is on an internal
network)
