In terms of semiotics isn't text just a special case of graphics?
A circle could be a picture of a circle or it could be the letter "o" -
it depends on the context.

I think the big difference is between the 1D commandline and a 2D
display - whether the building blocks are ascii blocks or single pixels.

Since a screen is physically 2D anything like virtual desktops, layered
windows etc is just giving the illusion of added dimensions.
