I use a Fujifilm Fine Pix 1400 Zoom, purchased for about £300 in March this year. It has USB (only) connection, and I did manage to view the camera contents under Linux the other week. Mind you, everything crashed when I disconnected... maybe I should have unmounted it first (it seems to treat the camera as a virtual SCSI drive). It takes pretty good pictures, has an optical zoom and is pretty sturdily made. Works for me....
