I had the same, and upgrading bonobo and liboaf sorted it.  The composer
window is the first time you're testing the object/component passing in
Evo, and a break thing could be lots of things, really.  :/

The mailing list (evolution at ximian.com) has been talking about problems
with libnspr on Mandrake systems; if you're running Mandrake (and even
if not, if you're desperate) make sure that you're up to date there, as
well.
