Right, I'll give that a go.

BTW, thanks for he advice everyone.  I've also run badblocks onto it, and 
come up with a big long list of them.

I have an even more interesting problem in gestation at the moment - it
seems the 2.4.10 kernel refuses to work with some specific hostnames.  
I'm still testing it out & making sure I've covered all the options, but I
think I'm onto a bona-fida kernel TCP/IP bug :-).  I don't doubt something
odd is happening, nor that other running kernels are immune.  Its more a
problem of generalisation, and ruling out any local specific stuff to me.
