ISTR that StarOffice, and possibly other Linux DOC/XLS compatible apps,
don't bother looking at the password, but I might be wrong.

Failing that, a quick Google shows interesting things for "word password
crack", including a downloadable demo off the first link. (You can take this
as a friendly slap on the wrist for not looking, if you like. ;-) )
