I never ran into any problems with using the serial cable, other than
the fact that it was so slooooooooooooooow. We ended up getting a PCMCIA
drive card, that presents the data on the smartmedia card as a VFAT
filesystem on an IDE drive. Simply plug the card in, mount it and copy
the files over.
