What range of OSs do you run? I can recommend Amanda as a backup
solution. Very configurable, uses either dump or GNU tar at your
discretion and with a command line browser that lets you examine (and
restore from) your backup archive as if it were a filesystem. All you
need is to be able to run an amanda client on each host (It can backup
smbfs mounts but not perfectly).
