... and they are all abysmal.

Have a look at the reviews section of the ACCU (http://www.accu.org/);
they have lots of books there.

For my suggested book list, look at the thread rooted at the post with
message-ID <87g0ernwnz.fsf at loki.wkstn.nix>; I missed some very good
books in there, so the rest of the thread merits reading, too.
