Why is that a problem?

If you're using ssh, it sets DISPLAY to the proxy, not the target X server. 
So it should be the local machine. The port is fairly random, although 
usually higher that 0 - I usually get 10, so on my laptop it's something like 
nomad:10.0. X11DisplayOffset is the conf option in question.

The only problems you've seen wrt to ssh are that you aren't authenticated 
against the local proxy, not that the tunnel isn't working.

Perhaps you can make use of .ssh/rc to do something clever.
