Doesn't it use a USB connection? (if you have a serial cable the please 
ignore me) If so you will need USB support for the handspring built into 
the kernel and things, there are HOW-TOs google will find them and if 
this is the case it will be a different device node something like 
/dev/usb/tts0 or something rather than /dev/ttyS1... (hazy memory)
