While I agree that that made me distinctly uncomfortable when I first
saw it, it's in some ways no worse than installing an RPM as root. A
Ximian provided RPM could easily contain a postinst script that could do
absolutely anything, and they're all installed as root. Admittedly,
they're less open to poison DNS attacks and suchlike.

If you use IMAP, the point becomes moot. I use SquirrelMail, Mozilla,
Evolution, and mutt to read my mail, depending where I'm sitting, and
what's easily accessible.
