You should consider using NFS (Network File System). It allows a server
to share files, which can then be mounted by the clients as if they were
a normal part of the local filesystem.

The usual way to do this is to have the users' home directories on a
central server, then when that user logs into a machine, their home
directory is mounted from the server. That way, it doesn't matter which
machine they log in to, they always see the same files.

All of this is supported by MacOSX out of the box (though it might take
a bit of tweaking to setup the server without buying MacOSX Server).
