It is.  We have a gateway mail box running Exim and SpamAssassin.  All
incoming mail is first diverted to a virus-scanning host, returned to
the gateway box and then run through spamd before being forwarded on.

If you are new to configuring mail systems, Postfix is easier to
configure than Exim (though far less configurable), slightly faster and
has a more secure architecture (though in practice Exim does not have an
insecure history, with only 3 advisories on Bugtraq).
