Thank you very much for all your help in trying to solve my X problem

The problem was eventually traced to files left by the failed attempt to 
install the nVidia binary drivers.

There were files left in the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions that were 
causing problems with glx.

Everything pretty much works again (serves me right for fiddeling, but it 
hasn't at all put me off :-)
