[Gllug] Modules

Hi all

I am having some trouble getting the fscking portmap service off my system.
Which of the following is the best method.

Can I go in and modify /etc/modules directly or is this frowned upon
Can I use rmmod (have tried this but it came back from the dead, probably
missed some fancy options). 
Modify the run level script names.
