I think it's 'proactively looking' that caused him to be in the
situation where he could make the second mistake (assuming it was a
mistake; the effect of his actions was to advertise to every person on
the list, which is what he wants - and he has a plausible excuse, but
that doesn't mean it's true, since we know all pimps are liars),
though; someone who doesn't go looking for spam victims will more
readily verify the recipient.
For instance, looking at the GLLUG archive, I'd be well aware that
this was an archive of a mailing list called GLLUG, which would tip me
off to the fact that gllug at linux.co.uk wasn't a person.
