I don't think you need to do anything with modules.

I think what you need is "/etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap stop" to stop it
once.
To stop it permanently something like "chkconfig portmap off"
or edit the symlinks in /etc/rc5.d/ etc.

Not sure what it is for Debian but I think there's something analagous.
