Whatever you want! In fvwm2, for example, you can map actions to
key combinations. Mine has shift-meta-x to start up a new rxvt,
shift-meta-l to lock the screen, and shift-meta-m to mute the
audio I'm listening to. Handy for when someone comes round to
your desk to talk to you.

X has a number of arbitrary moidifers, of which Meta is just one.
Others include Shift, Control, Alt, Super and Hyper. By convention,
certain key combinations do certain things, but all are available
to any program that wants to use them. fvwm2 lets you use any
combination of Shift, Control and Meta. Other programs may let you
use the other modifiers in various ways.
