If we are being pedantic

The damage the fire would do would depend how hot the inside of the IDE
drive got and what you use to recover the data from the disk.

Are the disks in the machine or another machine. Are they in removable
caddies placed beneath his bed at night

Fit another controller and you may be able to get back the data. If you have
two identical drives the controller from one should fit the other.

Pouring coffee into the machine, this is purely dependant on where you pour
it. If its in a caddy then I doubt the disc will be affected or if the
coffee is poured into some area not around the disc then it should be fine.
Shorting the board probably won't harm the IDE drive.

I think he was asking for general ideas about storage and Jims idea in my
very humble opinion was a sound one.
