Is there an entry in the password field for superuser in the mysql.user
table? It should be there in encrypted form.

I wonder if it's stopping you typing the password in plain text on the
commandline or something?
I vaguely remember having to do "mysql -u paul -p" and then entering the
password from a prompt.
