This is the sum of a geometric progression
i.e. w * (1 + x + x^2 + x^3 + x^4 + ... + x^(n-1))
they are just two algebraically equivalent ways of writing the same
thing.
because (1 + x + x^2 + x^3 + x^4 + ... + x^(n-1)) * (x - 1) = x^n - 1
I guess it's just the way that scores are weighted if an expression
apears multiple times.
